Raven

For me, a portrait is a careful balance between getting the little details right and trying to show the spirit of the person. I could have kept picking away at this, but when I started to feel like Raven was looking back at me, I stopped.

If you are so inclined, you can stop by The Art Room to see my choice for Still Life of the Week, and the latest contribution by another reader.

  1. Taryn this is amazing. I love the sensitive, and somewhat vulnerable expression of Raven. You did an amazing job with this. I think it's my favorite piece of yours yet. :)))

(and what are the odds that we both painted portraits of girls named raven and posted them on the same day?? *cue twilight zone theme*)

  2. Great paint application. The right values and colors in just the right places. I am in awe.

  3. I love her! Her tousled hair has just enough definition to express the feeling without being overworked and the expression on her face is priceless. Just love it!

  4. Crystal, thank you!- and yes, I noticed that we were both in the same zone yesterday- funny!

Julie and Maria, thanks so much.

  5. This portrait is captivating! I think your balance between painterliness and likeness is just spot on. Those eyes leapt out at me from a tiny thumbnail painting and I had to go in for more. Just beautiful!

  6. Beautiful and sweet. Of course I always love looseness in painting, yet at young girl's sweetness does shine through. It looks like she has a blue eye and a brown eye--or is this just how you painted her eye in shadow?
Also, I just took a look at your artists interview blog--what a great idea. I will keep this one on my reading list! Thank you!!

  7. Thanks Ann- lovely to read your comments- and thanks Candace. Candace, she was standing near a window when I took the photo, so I think perhaps one eye had a blue sky reflected in it, and the other didn't. I just decided to paint what I saw in the photo even if it looks a little odd...
