Lumberville Winter Landscape with Blue Roof

oil on board
5.5"x 6"
I did it! After much kvetching and anxiety about painting outside in winter, I bundled up and trundled myself off to the beautiful river town of Lumberville, PA to FINALLY PAINT MY FIRST WINTER LANDSCAPE!!

One reason I'm so excited about this is because I did not get as cold as I'd feared (thanks Mom for the fingerless gloves), although at the end I was beginning to shake a bit.

Another reason is that I discovered wonderful things about painting outside this time of year on sunny days. The sun stays low in the sky so everything looks dramatic all the time, even at noon. The colors are clean and clear, and there is no boredom with green, green, green and more green- instead there's a beautifully profound contrast between the warmth of bare trees in sunlight and the blue of the sky, river, bits of snow in shadow.

I've been blogging about some of my favorite winter landscapes in The Art Room, which was a way to rev myself up. So glad it worked!

I like this very much, Taryn! Painting in the cold is not so bad, unless it's WINDY.

This is a beauty. You are inspiring me. I used to paint outside in the winter but I have lost my nerve recently. If you sit in the sun and are very prepared it is not so bad and you're right it is beautiful.

Good for you......just thinking about it makes me cold. Not just cold but La Boheme cold...fingerless gloves and all.

Thanks for the inspiration...I have been putting off painting outside. This week I will try to do my encaustic painting on my deck. Thanks, Taryn for sharing this post!
